In the heart of the old town is the former church of Santa Maria di Spelonca, dating from the 12th century.  The building has recently undergone extensive renovation and  is now used for exhibitions and cultural events.  During the restoration work some wonderful medieval mosaics were revealed.  The church contained several chapels including the “Chapel of the Presepe” (Crib) dedicated to the patron saint of Sperlonga, San Leone Magno.  The vault is richly frescoed and it is dedicated to San Domenico.

Here you will find some interesting murals.  Going back in time, Sperlonga was protected by a castle and fortified walls, as dating from the 9th century this community found itself under constant threat of attack by Saracen raiders.  In 1524 the notorious pirate Khayr al-Din (better known as “Red Beard” or “Barbarossa”) conquered and devastated the town.  In 1622 it once again fell into the hands of the Turks.

Sperlonga’s architecture, with its narrow streets and long winding stairways, was designed to frustrate the sea pirates, making their incursions more problematic.

Thus a defence system was constructed, consisting of numerous watchtowers along the coast, those surviving are: Torre Centrale, Torre del Nibbio, Torre Truglia, Torre Capovento, Torre Sant’ Agostino, Torre Viola, and Torre d'Orlando.

The Torre Truglia, positioned on a rocky spit still dominates the entrance to Sperlonga's small yet colourful harbour.
